I am influenced by the outdoors and landscapes. It is fundamental to my work. A landscape is analogous to the psyche I suppose, and invites exploration. In my paintings people begin to inhabit these landscapes and the work starts to take on a life of its own.
A sense of equilibrium occurs when I enter into the space of painting - like dancing with abandon - where emotion and physicality take over any conscious volition and 'things just happen'.
Jung has said that the objects, structures and entities in dreams represent aspects of the individual and collective unconscious; these dream images often inhabit my paintings. They seem to appear without my intending it. The images, like my paintings themselves, are like old friends: familiar yet still mysterious.
